204&205/365 abu ghraib

204/365, copper

Two silhouette rings made from photos documenting the torture of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison.

Before I actually started sawing the copper sheet for this ring I was thinking about crucifixion
, but now the gesture seems more resolute and graceful, like an actor taking a bow at the final curtain. He appears very dignified to me.

205/365, nickel silver. This one calls to mind the KKK and has a sinister feel.

I see now that when I prepared the digital image before sawing I didn't keep the proportions of the original, so the figure is 'smooshed' from the top. Funny how the camera shows us things.

I think of this image as one of the most iconic photos depicting the atrocities perpetrated by American soldiers, there are electrical wires clipped to the prisoner's fingers.

project runway

Ring a Day has kept me from participating in the EtsyMetal Project Runway Challenges this year, I managed to squeeze in a necklace this week, the theme is the circus. Visit the EtsyMetal blog to see the other participant work.

71/365 funky pearl

This was my first attempt at the married metals technique and I filed the circles too much, so the gap was too big for most of the solder to flow. After all of that work I didn't want to waste it, so I soldered it to a piece of shibuichi. Sterling silver, shibuichi, nickel silver, saltwater pearl.

24/365 kite

This is the second piece I've designed with the photo in mind, the first was my creepy doll head ring. It's a new and interesting way for me to work. I'm really pleased with the pic, a wide angle lens helps with the illusion of scale.

13/365 ring for Haiti

A monumental earthquake shook Port-au-Prince yesterday, thousands have died and the presidential palace has toppled in one of the poorest countries in the world. I took some time to reflect on the tragedy and suffering today. I am so grateful that all of my beloved friends and family are healthy and well.
